How well a child is
rounded and trained as an adult has a lot to do with what they were taught in
school. Most of what they teach a child at school is worth remembering, even
things that are out of their syllabus – for their personal and professional development.
We do, however, wonder how well schools equip children with knowledge that
allows them with skills that they may or may not need? Does school teach
children everything they need to know? Evidently, there is a dearth of
practical knowledge to help children navigate through life. Early childhood education
shapes a child and they need more that just “education” to survive. Here are
some subjects that should be included within a school’s syllabus, and most
often aren’t.
Nutrition
Adolescent obesity and juvenile
diabetes are enough reason to ensure that your child understands the true
meaning of nutrition and isn’t brought up in a way that urges them to gorge on
chips to fill up their tummy. Instead of struggling with a diet and exercise
later, children should learn the importance of a balanced diet and sustainable
food choices earlier in life.
Coding
Coding can be an
innovating way to foster “kidpreneurs” who go on to become successful
entrepreneurs. How often do children who spend their time playing games on a
screen know what went into developing that game? It also broadens a child’s
problem-solving skills and practical thinking abilities. Programming for Kids
can also pave the way for a successful career in coding for children inclined
towards it.
Cooking
Cooking, might we add, is
not a gender specific subject. If both genders are capable of eating, then both
genders are capable of cooking too. Knowing how to cook a meal isn’t just good
for your health but is also good for your wallet. It sustains you and is an
essential skill for basic physical survival and independence. Cooking doesn’t
mean stirring up a culinary masterpiece. It also means whipping up a simple,
healthy meal that you can enjoy and is a skill everybody should have.
Taxes & Budgeting
Your child will learn
what they learn to eventually grow up and earn their own money by living their
dreams. However, how often do schools teach your children how to manage the
money they will eventually? How to manage your taxes and how to make a personal
budget are imperative skills that every child must have. Knowing how to manage
your finances is just as important as being financially stable and independent
and this must be inculcated within a child from an early age.
